2026 Eco Web Hosting Review
How many .eco domains are using eco-friendly web hosting in 2026? We checked every .eco domain to find out.
At .eco, part of our mission is to help everyone make more eco-friendly technology choices. One of the most environmentally impactful decisions that you make when setting up a new website is choosing where to host it. That’s why whenever someone searches for a .eco domain on this site, we highlight domain retailers and web hosts that operate sustainably, by running on renewable energy, having high energy-efficiency or publishing clear environmental policies and commitments.
To understand how the .eco community is following this guidance, we annually review all .eco domains to see how many are using sustainable web hosting.
This is our fifth year doing this analysis. Every year, we've gained new insights by reviewing this data and we're happy to share what we've learned.
Approach
To perform this analysis, we first identify every .eco domain with an active website. We define an active .eco website as:
- resolving successfully (returning a 200 HTTP status code)
- being served from a .eco domain (does not redirect to a domain name under a different TLD)
- containing meaningful content (it is not a registrar parking or contruction page or is otherwise devoid of useful information)
Once we determine the set of .eco domain name with active websites, we check which of these domains are using eco-friendly web hosting by using Green Web Check from the Green Web Foundation.
2026 Results
As of September 24, 2026, 46% of active .eco websites use an eco-friendly web hosting provider. This is an increase of 1% from last year.
.eco domains use 81 distinct green web hosting providers. This is a drop of 14 from last year. The Green Web Foundation has steadily strengthened the criteria that they use to determine if a hosting provider's claims as qualify. We will discuss the implications of these changes later in this post.

Some of the largest hosting providers removed from the Green Hosting Directory this year include:
- Microsoft Azure (1% of last year's websites)
- World4You (Austria)

We are happy to see Krystal crack the top 10 and Infomaniak continue to climb the leaderboard! Also, as mentioned in prior years, while Cloudflare is listed as the top provider, as it is primarily a proxy service, it is possible that the websites are hosted with a different provider that may or may not be eco-friendly. With the growth of online threats and Internet bot traffic using a security proxy service like Cloudflare is becoming increasingly popular.
How does .eco compare with the rest of the Internet?
As in prior years, we used the Cloudflare Radar Top 10,000 domains ranking as a basis of comparison. This index represents the 10,000 domains that receive the most traffic through Cloudflare's DNS resolvers.
Checking these domains using Green Web Check, we found that 27% of those domains are using an eco-friendly hosting provider. So at 46% .eco domains are much more likely to be hosted sustainably.
It's also worth noting that the top 10,000 domains tend to use fewer distinct green hosting providers. They tend to be more concentrated using larger web hosts, which makes sense for high traffic websites.
